City profile

Bari is a sprawling city, on the Adriatic, with a population of 320,000. It is the capital of the Apulia region and the largest city in southern Italy, after Naples. Barivecchia, or Old Bari, the heart of Roman Bari, is a jungle of streets and passageways that was, until fairly recently, considered a no-go area by many of Bari's residents due to the high levels of petty crime. A large-scale redevelopment plan has seen a massive change in the area and you will now find there a riot of hip bars and restaurants open "from dusk til dawn" .

"Se Parigi avesse il mare, sarebbe una piccola Bari" (If Paris had the sea, it would be a little Bari). This popular saying tells you more about the wry local sense of humor than it does about the city, but Bari has a surprising amount of charm, particularly Barivecchia, its increasingly chic medieval old town.
