Umeå is a university town in Västerbotten. The city has 75,645 inhabitants. it is a centre of education, technical and medical research, with two universities and over 30,000 students.

Umeå is a centre for cultural activities, with annual film and music festivals; the city is elected European Capital of Culture of 2014. Atrractions in Umeå include the Bildmuseet museum, exotic animals at Holmsunds Tropikhus and Holmöarna, which is a group of islands. Sculptures, by leading Swedish and international artists, are exhibited in Umedalen's former hospital Park. Of course, Bettnesand Beach is popular.

Nightlife is relatively good. Clubs and pubs are located either on campus or in a cluster downtown. The campus clubs are either student-only, downtown clubs and pubs usually have a higher age limit for admittance.
