The field of graphic design is continually changing. Graphic Design in Arnhem is a leader in the developments arising in the field of art and design. The programme encourages you to examine your role as a graphic designer. The programme, traditionally centred around typography, distinguishes itself with a focus on design research which allows you to push the boundaries of the field. This means that during your study, you will do a great deal of editorial design research and experimentation with language, images, media and design techniques in order to develop new forms of information transfer.

Programme content


The first year is devoted to orientation and expanding your toolset. In this year you will learn the basics of graphic design through modules in: Spatial Design; Graphic Design; Typography; Visual Grammar; Design Methodology; Scripting; Digital design (In Design, Photoshop and Illustrator); Photography; Drawing and Art History

You will also take various practical courses, for example screen printing, bookbinding, metal and woodworking and ceramics

In the second year, the courses are more in-depth and research-oriented. The emphasis is on experimentation, with classes and workshops on the following areas: Interaction Design; Design Research; Typography;Audiovisual Design; Graphic Design; Photography; Design Philosophy and Media and Design Theory

The third year is dedicated to developing your personal design methodology. You will work on projects from professional practice in which you will develop your personal vision for design. During the first semester of the third year, you will take one of the following courses:

- Conceptual Type Design minor which prepares you for the Typography specialisation, OR
- Design Critque minor which prepares you for the Editorial Design specialisation.

In the fourth year, you will do an internship, write a thesis and complete three design assignments.

2 A-Levels and 4 GCSEs or relevant BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma

Five passes at Leaving Cert (minimum 200 points) OR relevant QQi/FETAC Level 5. Subjects to include Maths.
