Programme profile

The aim of this programmeis to equip students with the most up-to-date and high-quality knowledge and skills in information technology and, in particular, to equip students with a good level of competence in the following areas: Software Technology; Telecommunications Technology; Embedded Engineering; Information Technology Systems; Information Technology Security.

Students also have a great opportunity to gain practical experience as Metropolia has substantial educational and research activities in mobile communication networks, computer-based measurement systems, real-time systems and in a network-based project learning.

Programme content

Students are required to select on the following areas of specialisation:

Communications and Data Networks
This specialisation covers Internet technology and mobile communications widely. For Internet activities, a Telecoms Laboratory has an independent study and simulation network containing all essential working components such as routers, hubs and switches. This simulation network allows network installation, configuration and management actions that could not be carried out in an operational network. The mobile communications laboratory provides extensive sets of computer aided environments for education and evaluation of cellular network operation.

Embedded Engineering
Embedded engineering provides tools to interface real world events with the virtual, computerised world. The objective of this specialisation is to provide a solid understanding on how electronic devices operate. Students will learn electronics fundamentals, low-level programming of microcontrollers, and how hardware interacts with high-level user interfaces. Typically embedded engineering students will be working in product development teams.

Software Engineering
True software professionals are in great demand in the ICT industry. Software development consists of many phases such as systems and requirement analysis, design of the computer system, design of the architecture of the software, programming, testing, commissioning and maintenance. The programming skills are very important for a software engineer. In this course programming is more than just coding; it is modelling, problem solving or task performing.
