In 2009, Universität Karlsruhe (TH) merged together with Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe and was renamed Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT).
Established in 1825 and therefore the oldest of all German Institutes of Technology, Universität Karlsruhe (TH) (now named Karlsruhe Institute of Technology ) has long been internationally recognised as one of the leading institutions for the education of engineers worldwide. As a consequence, the region around Karlsruhe offers the highest per capita research and development expenditure in Europe and, correspondingly, the highest density of researchers, scientists and engineers in Germany. With over 30 percent of the university's budget coming from external funding, the university is one of the most strongly research-oriented institutions in Germany and in the world, a fact recently confirmed by the German Excellence Initiative.
In October 2006, Universität Karlsruhe was awarded the status of "Elite University", thanks to its participation in a national competition hosted by the German Science Foundation. Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (formerly Universität Karlsruhe) now ranks among the top universities in Germany and as a result will be able to spend an additional EUR 96 million. In Karlsruhe, a proportion of the extra money will help finance the university's internationally-acclaimed Center of Nanotechnology.
18,000 students are currently studying at the university, including 3,000 from more than 80 countries around the world. Students are instructed by over 300 professors. In the field of Engineering, many of these professors were previously employed in managerial positions in large, multinational companies

The International Department offers an attached hall of residence with 122 single and double rooms distributed over three floors. The rooms are comfortably fitted with their own bathrooms, internet access and telephone connection. Groups of four to six students share a modern kitchen as well as dining and working areas.
