Originally a Dental School and Medical Faculty, Umea University was founded in 1965. It is Sweden's fifth oldest university. During the first six years of the 1990s, the total number of enrolled students doubled at Umea University. Today the total of students - including those at the postgraduate level is approximately 36,700. More than 9,000 of these students are taking courses via distance education, or off-campus Umea University's Campus is patterned after the American Campus model. Consequently, almost all of the courses and programmes that are taught in English take place on Campus Umea or at the adjacent University Hospital.

At Umea University there are four faculties - the Faculty of Arts; Medicine; Social Sciences; and Science and Technology ヨ and eight schools or institutes: School of Architecture, Institute of Design, School of Business, Academy of Fine Arts, School of Restaurant and Culinary Arts, Institute of Technology, School of Education and Sport Sciences Centre.

The University does not assist students in finding accommodation though its interntional office can put you in touch with local accommodation agencies. Rooms are available from about €325 per month.
