Consistently ranked as the leading Italian university, or amongst the leading Italian universities, the University of Pisa was officially founded in 1343, though it was briefly closed and re-opened by the Medicis in 1473, and again in 1543. Gallileo was Professor of Mathematics there in 1589.

The university has grown to an establishment of some 53,000 students, studying in eleven faculties, including : Law, Agriculture, Economics , Pharmacy, Engineering, Foreign Languages & Literature, Philosophy & Humanities, Medicine & Surgery, Veterinary Medicine, Mathematics & Natural Sciences  and Political Science. Reflecting its long history, the university contains some seventeen libraries and thirteen museums and historical/scientific collections.
