Plovdiv
City profile
Plovdiv is the second-largest city in Bulgaria after Sofia with a population of 338,153.
Parts of Plovdiv are very attractive: the old town embodies the town's long and varied history, with Thracian fortifications, Roman walls and public buildings and impressive timber-framed Renaissance houses which look down on the Ottoman mosques and the artisans' dwellings of the lower town.
But Plovdiv isn't only a parade of antiques: the city's arts festivals and trade fairs rival even Sofia's in number.
Plovdiv is a large industrial centre with metal works and textile factories.
