City profile

Trieste, with a population of 205,000, is on the Adriatic coast, in north-eastern Italy, near the border with Slovenia. In fact, it is only 30km from Croatia and is almost entirely surrounded by Slovenia, which physically isolates it from the rest of the Italy.

Lonely Planet has described the city of as “the world's most underrated travel destination”. The same guide refers to the city’s “glistening belle époque cafes, dark congenial bars and its maddening Bora wind”. The city is in one of the richest regions of Italy, and has been a great centre for shipping, through its port, shipbuilding and financial services.
