International Tourism has become one of the most important export industries in the last decade. The World Tourism Organisation expects to see a hundred percent increase in turnover within the next twenty years, which will give rise to a a growing demand for professionals in the field.

This programme trains students for management, policy-making and consultancy positions in the international tourism industry. The programme is directed at sustainable tourism development. Tourism can only make a lasting contribution to the development of a place, region or country if sustainable tourism is the starting point of the development. This innovative programme includes subjects such as Responsible Tourism, Rural Tourism, Community Tourism, Heritage Tourism, Adventure Tourism and Entrepreneurship.

Programme content


Year 1 : an introduction to the tourism sector. You will look at trends, the market and the features of tourism. You will also study quality management in tourism companies and the distinctive aspects of rural and urban tourism. You will visit a European city and/or a rural tourist area. Extensive attention is also paid to the basic principles of management, consumer behaviour, marketing, ethics and business economics. You will study a Foreign Language.

Year 2: you will study the strategic aspects of tourism and look at the range of tourism products and services. You will look at developing tourism infrastructures and, in this context the importance of responsible behaviour with regard to environment and culture plays an important role in your strategy. Other subjects this year include financial and operational management, marketing, product development and Human Resource Management. You will also complete fieldwork at a destination on the Mediterranean.

Year 3: focuses on strategic management. You develop further your management skills and improve and widen and deepen your marketing knowledge. .You take part in a management game, in which you apply much of the theory learned. You can choose to follow minors at Stenden"s international campuses in Qatar, South Africa and Thailand or follow a semester with a university in another country.

Year 4: a 30-week internship and your Bachelor"s Thesis

The Tourism and Hospitality Management programmes of Stenden University of Applied Sciences have successfully met international accreditation Standards of Excellence.
