Programme profile

Your brain analyses your memories and experiences in a flash. It can learn and reprogramme itself to adapt to new input. It also cleans and unscrambles the data, then converts it so you understand and make the right choices. Piece of cake! But… how does this work in a company, with no mind of its own?

This programme qualifies you to be the brain of an organisation. In order words, it enables you to understand and manipulate data, develop software around it, and everything in between. With these skills, you can build and improve digital systems, apps, AI and other self-learning tools. Or help optimise business operations and professionally influence decisions on a large scale. You’ll play a key role in whatever field you wish to specialise.

Mathematical Engineers, a name given to experts on both mathematics and IT, can be found everywhere: working behind the scenes as data scientists, software developers or statisticians – or more in the foreground, as business analysts, self-made entrepreneurs or consultants. This usually takes place in fields like IT, tech, finance, risk assessment and logistics. In turn, these fields cover every industry imaginable, whether it’s media or music, sports, commerce or sustainability.

Mathematical Engineering helps you excel in software development, data science, and even entrepreneurship. In other words: in this diverse study programme you obtain all the much-needed skills for a future career in IT, using it to advance (digital) systems, mobile networks, artificial intelligence and organisational structures.

As a professional Mathematical engineer, you will be a motivated fast-thinker who enjoys working in a dynamic and and specialised environment. You will need good communication skills, and will know how to implement your analytical skills and technological knowledge. You will move from solving day-to-day technical problems to helping your organisation realize its strategy.

This course covers everything you need to follow your ideal career path, with more than enough flexibility to adapt along the way. Since it offers the most options for your future, our primary focus within Applied Mathematics is on the study of Data Science.

Programme content

Years 1 and 2 are both split up into 4 terms. Each of these terms has a central focus, that guides the maths and IT knowledge you gain towards a specific applicable purpose within the realm of Data Science. You will work on 2 large projects a year, to cover 4 major themes: Databases, Model Graphics, App development and Web Science. Together with students from Years 2 and 4, you will choose and develop a third project as a team during the Learning Challenge.

In Year 3, it’s time to put all your hard-earned abilities to work and decide where you want to specialise further. The other half of this year will be dedicated to an internship in Holland or abroad. Afterwards, you will be ready to delve deeper and tackle one of the specialisation tracks we offer. You can also do an exchange, or start a minor that suits you elsewhere.

You can specialise in either:

- Deep learning, or
- App development

Finally, in Year 4, you will follow a series of expert courses covering several specialised career fields, and finish your programme with a graduation project.

The program also offers the Cisco CCNA and Cisco CCNP programming qualiification.
