Programme profile

Have you ever stopped to wonder how navigation apps determine your fastest route? Or asked yourself how translations apps or music playlists are created? The answer is: big data. It is all because someone gathers the data in order to create better models and programmes. The effect? A comfortable life for all individuals who use these systems every single day.

This programme helps you excel in software development, data science, and even entrepreneurship. In this diverse study programme you obtain all the much-needed skills for a future career in IT, using it to advance (digital) systems, mobile networks, artificial intelligence and organisational structure. There are four major themes in the programme:

Sharpening your mathematical skills
Formulas, models and numbers. You have a keen eye for analysing information, you like solving puzzles, and you love detecting patterns. Mathematics is a crucial tool that helps you investigate and analyse data on a much larger scale. Most importantly, it helps you to become a better software engineer or data scientist.

Connecting the digital dots
Keeping up with the latest technological developments, analysing big data or creating complicated programming solutions: these challenges are going to be your main task. At Mathematical Engineering, you learn how to connect the digital dots and deepen your understanding of mathematics, as well as modelling and applying your in-depth knowledge to real-life situations.

Taking on a challenge
You get the opportunity to strengthen your independent learning skills, as well as those much-needed teamwork skills. Mathematical Engineering offers you an international environment full of like-minded individuals, which means: working together, presenting ideas, and interacting with –and learning from– professionals in the field. We help you develop your own creative ideas, and perhaps, start your own company someday.

Programme content

In the first year, you will become acquainted with the broad mathematical engineering field. You follow mathematical courses, but also programming, networking and English. You will immediately put what you've learned to practical use during projects and assignments.

Year two is all about increasing your mathematical and IT skills, such as advanced programming techniques, including object-oriented programming and software engineering.
You will address complex algorithms in subjects on graph theory, numerical analysis and algorithms and data structures. Throughout the year, you will test your knowledge by working on real applications.

In the third and fourth year, you will choose two specialisations. The options are:

- App Development

-
Advanced Networking

You can opt to do your specialisation  in partner universities in Helsinki, Berlin or Paris
