Programme profile

The School of Dental Medicine in U. Zagreb is the only independent biomedical higher education institution in the Republic of Croatia and it is one of the member faculties of the University of Zagreb.

The study of
dental medicine embraces integrated undergraduate and graduate university study programs belonging to the field of biomedicine and health. The study aims at teaching university students to become health professionals. Its aim is to educate and train biologically oriented, technically competent, socially sensitive practitioners of dental medicine who adhere to the highest standards of professional conduct and ethics, and who can function effectively as members of the nation's health care delivery system. They should be trained to treat the diseases of the oral cavity, dental diseases as well as the diseases of jaws and other structures of the stomatognathic system. In addition, the study pursues a special task in order to raise awareness among students, adults and children about the importance of their oral health and preventive measures.

Programme content

The courses are divided into four basic groups: basic courses, preclinical courses, general medical courses and dental courses. Basic courses amount to 805 teaching hours (16% of the total hours). General medical courses amount to 1015 hours (20%) whereas the greatest number of teaching hours belong to the dental group of courses– 3295 hours (64%).

In this way, the students are able to obtain the basic knowledge and are introduced to general medical courses with the focus on dental courses and many hours of practicals. The additional 500 hours of practicals have been introduced to the 6th year of study since the formerly obligatory foundation year has been abolished in 2015.

Six passes at Leaving Cert (to include, at H4 or above, Biology PLUS Chemistry OR Physics)
