Tracing its roots to 1842, as a teachers education college in Harnosand, Mid Sweden University was established in 1993, when the University Colleges of Sundsvall/Harnosand and ostersund were merged . The university has grown to become one of the ten largest institutions of higher education in Sweden, with approximately 15,000 students on its three campuses.

Undergraduate courses and research are organised principally under the two faculties of the Human Sciences and Technology and the natural Sciences, offering a wide range of programmes within the social sciences, behavioural sciences, media, nursing, teacher training, information technology, natural sciences, technology, and languages as well as other subjects within the humanities.
