USAMV Cluj-Napoca was established, as the Higher School of Agriculture, in 1869. It achieved university status in 1990.

The university currently has some 6000 students in its four faculties: Agriculture; Horticulture; Animal Husbandry & Biotechnologies; and Veterinary Medicine.

The university is a member in the European Universities Association, by which it was assessed in 2003.
