Programme profile

This programme takes place at the Maastricht Hotel Management School, a faculty of the Zuyd University of Applied Sciences. Since its foundation in 1950, Maastricht Hotel Management School has built up an excellent reputation both at home and abroad.

As an integral part of its curriculum, Maastricht Hotel Management School exposes students in the operational modules to a unique training environment, both experimental and future-oriented. For this reason, the Chateau Bethlehem has been transformed into an innovative, 26-room teaching hotel, offering restaurant, bar and meeting facilities.

The programme offers a good balance of practical work and theory. Acquiring knowledge, learning skills and developing a corresponding mindset are three factors that are inextricably connected. In the lessons, during problem-based learning sessions, and while on practical duty in a hotel, you will be repeatedly challenged to work on developing your competencies. Every assignment is related to professional practice. In addition, you will acquire experience outside the educational setting - through excursions to hospitality businesses, during two intensive internship periods of five months each and during the management project in the final stage of the course.

Programme content

In the first year, you will be given the chance to show that you are suited to the programme. During this year, you will be introduced to the theoretical side and the practical side of the hospitality industry.

The second year starts with another theory module, focusing on Entrepreneurship and Human Resource Management. In the second half of the year, you will spend 5 months as a student trainee in the hotel sector or leisure industry. Most of the practical internships take place at locations abroad, varying from European countries to Asia or America.

The first half of year three focuses on change management and strategic management. During this period, you can continue building on the experience you acquired during your internship. From module 6 (second half of year three), you choose to follow one of four profiles: Hotel Management; Entrepreneurship; Business in Food Service; Horizons in Hospitality .You give shape to this profile by choosing one or two minors (module 6) and the theme of your graduation path and your management internship.

In the final year, everything you have learnt comes together in your graduation (management) project, specified by an external client. This is a company, organisation or institution in the hospitality sector or a related sector. The last 5 months of the study programme are reserved for the management internship, which you can carry out in the netherlands or abroad.
