Programme profile


This programme is intended for people who aim at taking professional care of animals and protect their well-being.

Multidisciplinary field experience, including visit to zoological parks, rehabilitation centres, research facilities, will be organized during the course of study to introduce students to the practical activity. In the third year, student will choose one of two specialisations:

- Wild Animals
- Laboratory Animals


Furthermore, the second semester of the third year will be dedicated to a compulsory practical training. Students will work at affiliated structures under the direct supervision of an expert in animal care.

Fees charged with reference to family income. First-year fee waivers available based on grades and motivation.

There is usually a second application round announced in May/June

Programme content


FIRST YEARBioethics and legislation; Applied chemistry and biochemistry; Applied mathematics and physics; Animal biology and genetics; Comparative animal anatomy

SECOND YEAR: Comparative Animal Physiology; Physiological basis of pain, suffering and distress and general ethology; Principles of Prevention and Control of Transmissible Animal Diseases; Animal Husbandry and welfare; Basics of animal nutrition and feeding; General concepts of pharmacology; General pathology and laboratory techniques; Comparative animal reproduction, neonatology and breeding techniques

THIRD YEAR:

WILD ANIMAL SPECIALSATION: 
Wild animal care in clinical settings; Comparative ecology and ethology; Wild animal husbandry, management and welfare; Principle of post-mortem techniques and tissue sampling
LABORATORY ANIMAL SPECIALISATION:
Laboratory animal husbandry, management and welfare; Comparative Pathology; Laboratory animal care in clinical settings and pain assessment; Laboratory animal ethology and welfare; Statistics of experimental designs and the three Rs issues

Progression


Students can progress to Masters programmes in Veterinary Science, taught through English, in other universities across Europe.

Entry Requirements


Three A-Levels and three GCSEs. Biology, Physics and Chemistry preferred

Six passes at Leaving Certificate, tom inc 2 x H5. Biology, Physics and Chemistry preferred.
