Emmerich lies on the north bank of the Rhine, just inside the German border; it is only 4 km to the Netherlands to the north and 5 km to the west. It is therefore the last German town on the Rhine before the river flows into the Netherlands. It has a population of approx. 30,000. Very little of the pre-1945 city remains. Places of note include the Holy Ghost Church, Rhine Bridge and the Rhine Museum.
